Do battery powered products or products powered from extra-low voltage supplies need to be safety tested before being sold on the Australian market?
Although the products may not be in-scope of the Electrical Equipment Safety Scheme (EESS), State laws and Electrical Safety Acts throughout Australia require that such products have documentary evidence that they comply with an applicable product safety standard.
Apart from the legalities, such products, particularly some battery-powered products, can pose potential explosion hazards and, if not tested, can put personal safety at risk.
These products may be mobile cellular devices that need to comply with the Australian Communication and Media Authority’s (ACMA) requirements included in the Telecommunications Labelling Notice. This means that having an endorsed product safety report from an accredited body is mandatory.
It is always important to talk to a compliance specialist, such as Comtest Group before jumping to conclusions when it comes to product safety and certainly before introducing a product to the market.
