Cellular and Mobile Product Testing

The Telecommunications (Mobile Equipment Air Interface) Technical Standard 2022 applies to all devices intended to connect to the Public Mobile Telecommunications Service (PMTS), for example:

  • Mobile phones and tablets
  • Telematics devices
  • PCs and networking equipment with cellular capability
  • Cellular Internet-of-Things (IoT) products
  • Satellite phones

Voice capable devices must adhere to the AS/CA S042.1 rules on emergency call requirements. Devices intended to be held to the ear (such as mobile phones and handsets) must meet the sound pressure limits to ensure safe use by consumers.

As part of the AS/CA S042.1:2025 standard, new requirements are being put in place to cover Australia’s future National Messaging System (NMS). The National Messaging System is based off the standards for Europe (EU-Alert) and North America, and is expected to be operational by mid-2027.

All 4G (LTE) devices must adhere to requirements of AS/CA S042.4:2022, and 5G NR devices follow AS/CA S042.5:2022. This is regardless of voice or data connectivity. The upcoming 2025 revisions of these standards have removed 3G (UMTS) as it is no longer active in Australia, and added requirements for Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) devices.
